Mukesh Ambani, who runs oil-to-retail conglomerate Reliance Industries, remains the richest Indian with a net worth of USD 103 billion, an increase of 24 per cent year-on-year.
Adani, the head of port-to-energy conglomerate Adani Group, is second, with his wealth rising 153 per cent to $81 billion.
The list says that while Ambani’s wealth has grown by 400 per cent in the last 10 years, Adani’s wealth has grown by 1,830 per cent.
HCL’s Shiv Nadar is at the third spot with a net worth of $28 billion, followed by Cyrus Poonawalla ($26 billion) of Serum Institute and steel magnate Lakshmi N Mittal ($25 billion).
“Gautam Adani, 59, is the highest gainer on the M3M Hurun Global List 2022, adding $49 billion to his wealth last year,” M3M Hurun Global Rich List said in a statement. The increase in his net worth exceeds that of “the top three global billionaires such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bernard Arnault.”
Following the listing of renewable energy company Adani Green, his wealth grew nearly five-fold to $81 billion in 2020 from $17 billion.
Ambani’s wealth increased by $ 20 billion in 2021.
Nykaa Founder Falguni Nayar ($7.6 billion) is the richest new entrant to the Hurun Global Rich List 2022.
The 2022 M3M Hurun Global Rich List has 2,557 companies and 3,381 billionaires from 69 countries, the statement said.
Anas Rehman Junaid, MD and lead researcher said that India ranks third not only in terms of the number of billionaires, but also in terms of the number of billionaires who have added at least one billion dollars to their wealth.
“Over the past 10 years, Indian billionaires have added nearly USD 700 billion to their cumulative wealth – this is equivalent to the GDP of Switzerland and twice the GDP of the UAE!”
India has 18 per cent of the world’s population and 8 per cent of the world’s ‘known’ billionaires, up from 4.9 per cent five years ago, he said.
India has 215 billionaires compared to 1,133 Chinese billionaires and 716 Americans.
Adani is the biggest fundraiser on the list for 2022, followed by Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and Bernard Arnault (an additional $39 billion) founder and CEO of luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, the statement said. .
Ambani is at the eighth position in terms of wealth growth.
According to the list, Ambani’s wealth was $ 45 billion five years ago and $20.5 billion 10 years ago. Adani was worth $8.8 billion 10 years ago and $14 billion five years ago.
With a net worth of $23 billion, Radhakishan Damani of Avenue Supermarts and SP Hinduja of Hinduja entered the top 100 of the M3M Hurun Global Rich List for the first time in 2022.
