Taking note of the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the wake of increase in COVID cases with the commencement of Gangasagar Mela, the Calcutta High Court ordered the formation of a new two-member committee to oversee the event.

A PIL filed by lawyers on Monday sought the removal of Suvendu Adhikari from the committee overseeing the event. The officer and chairman of the State Human Rights Commission has been replaced with now retired Justice Samasti Chattopadhyay and a member of the State Legal Services Authority.

The court order also said that if the Mela is found to be the cause of the spread of COVID, the committee may recommend the state to ban entry to Sagar Island, on which the government can take immediate action.

Double vaccination and 72 hours prior negative RT-PCR report is a must for all attendees. It is also stated in the orders that Gangasagar Declared a notified area within 24 hours.

HC has ordered the Chief Secretary, Government of West Bengal to ensure compliance of the directions.
