Ganga Rising, But Below Danger Mark In Kashi | Varanasi News – Times of India

VARANASI: As a result of heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the water level of the Ganga, which had been witnessing a receding or steady trend in Varanasi for past couple of days, started rising again on Wednesday at the rate of 3 cm per hour. The rise in the river was also witnessed in Mirzapur and Ghazipur.
UP Jal Shakti minister Swatantra Dev Singh, who was here in Varanasi, said that the water level of the Ganga increased in the region after 10 lakh cusec water was released in the Yamuna from Betwa, Chambal and Sindh rivers. All precautionary measures are being taken to minimise the impact of flood, he said.
According to the flood bulletin released by the Central Water Commission, the Ganga was flowing at the mark of 69.19 m, about 2.07 m below the danger mark (71.262 m). In Mirzapur, the water level was increasing at the rate of 5 cm per hour, and the river was flowing at the mark of 75.15 m, about 2.5 m below the danger mark (77.724). Ghajipur also recorded an increase in water level at the rate of 1 cm per hour. The river was flowing at the mark of 62.2 m, about 0.90 m below the danger mark (63.105 m). However, Ganga, which was flowing 0.59 m above the danger mark in Ballia, showed a receding trend on Wednesday.
