Gandhi Jayanti: Conflict between BJP, Congress workers in Bhopal over putting party flags near Mahatma statue

As the nation paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary on Saturday, BJP and Congress workers also paid tributes in keeping with the lessons of peace and non-violence preached by the Father of the Nation.

The leaders and their followers formed a line for the Gandhi statue at the local Minto Hall that day, but workers from both parties started fighting over the placement of their party flags near the statue.

The police had to be called under the leadership of DIG Irshad Wali to pacify the agitated workers.

Both sides had fixed a similar time, 10 am, to lay wreaths at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. By the time State Congress President Kamal Nath reached the spot, the venue was packed with BJP flags.

Congress workers created a ruckus on this and as soon as the information was received that Nath was about to come, Congress workers reached near the statue to put up party flags. BJP workers also did the same.

Soon they entered into a heated exchange and District Collector Avinash Lavania and Wali intervened and pacified the political activists.

BJP district president Sumit Pachauri said, “We had planned the program a day back, but Congress workers reached the spot and tried to remove our party’s flag.”

Mahila Congress district chief Santosh Kansana said, “We were participating in the event peacefully as Gandhi does not belong to any party.” He said BJP workers were raising slogans of ‘BJP Zindabad’, trying to make it a political programme.
