Sources told India TV that the discussion on fuel prices and the current coronavirus situation in the country was one of the key issues in the meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conferencing on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister chaired the first personal meeting of the Union Cabinet at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. Modi had his first meeting with his new team just a day after the Union Cabinet reshuffle.

Presentations were given by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Petroleum and Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in the important meeting held on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs informed the Council about the details of the Bills to be introduced in the upcoming session of Parliament as well as possible issues which may be sought for discussion by the Opposition.

Sources said the petroleum ministry also highlighted the reasons for rising prices of petrol, diesel and LPG besides details of centre-state revenue sharing.

Subsequently, the Health Ministry apprised the Council of the current COVID-19 situation in the country including the status of vaccination. Along with this, information about the steps taken to deal with the shortage of oxygen was also shared.

According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi advised all the members to be prepared for the monsoon session of Parliament, so that a tough stand can be taken for the government. He informed everyone and also asked them to follow all the rules related to Parliament and their respective ministries.

Sources quoted Modi as saying, “Senior ministers will be accountable even if the MoS answers on certain issues in Parliament.” He also asked all the members to be present during the roster duty in Parliament.

The monsoon session of Parliament will begin on July 19 and end on August 13. This will be the first season since the second wave of COVID-19, which was worse than ever.
