Fuel price hike: Kamal Haasan’s MNM protests in Tamil Nadu, demands Center to cut rates

Chennai: Makkal Nidhi Maiyam activists on Saturday (July 10) demonstrated against the rising fuel prices and carried placards demanding reduction in prices from the central government.

Leading the protest in Vallurvarkottam, party vice-president AG Maurya said that his party is supporting public welfare and has approached the courts against the central and state governments on issues relating to public concern.

Pointing to a petition that his party had filed against the inauguration of TASMAC during the first wave of Covid-19. He said MNM chief Kamal Haasan has directed to protest against the high taxes imposed on fuel by the central and state governments at higher prices.

“We are on the roads and asking the central and state governments to cut the prices of fuel including domestic LPG cylinders. We have demanded reduction in prices but we are not listening. We will continue to protest on the streets,” Maurya said.

He urged the central government to withdraw taxes on petrol and diesel to reduce the burden on the common people. “We urge the newly elected DMK-led state government to reduce the prices, as promised at the time of elections. We want to warn that if both the governments do not reduce these prices immediately, the cost of essential commodities will go up and people will suffer further due to rising cost of transportation,” the MNM leader said.
