NT Rama Rao (NTR) is known as the first mass hero of the Telugu film industry. He had a charming smile and an impressive screen presence which wooed the audiences to the theatres. There was a time when instead of deities in homes in Andhra Pradesh, their posters were at home.
NTR is recognized as the trendsetter of the Telugu film industry. NTR experimented with de-glamorized roles and old characters. Her die-hard fans and audience appreciated the honesty she brought on screen. NTR also paved the way for commercial films.
NTR’s stardom was similar to that of megastar Amitabh Bachchan and both had great respect for each other. Receiving the coveted NT Rama Rao Award in 2013, megastar Amitabh Bachchan said that he and NTR had a great relationship and considered him a great son of Indian soil.
NTR remade many of Amitabh Bachchan’s films in Telugu. NTR starred in the remake of the 1974 hit film Zanjeer, titled Nippulanti Manishi.
Significantly, after the age of 50, most actors stop playing lead roles. Even Amitabh Bachchan was confined to character roles by that age. But NTR was impressive in the remake of Zanjeer even at the age of 51.
Making a good remake of a hit film is never easy. In 2013, Ram Charan also starred in the remake of the film Zanjeer. But the film bombed at the box office and was condemned by both the audience and critics.
NTR starred in several remakes of films originally helmed by Amitabh Bachchan. NTR starred in 1976 in Magadu, a remake of Deewar. Mawari Manchitanam starring NTR was a remake of Do Anjaane. NTR’s Yugandhar was a remake of Amitabh’s blockbuster film Don.
Apart from the ones mentioned above, there were many roles which made NTR reach out to the masses. NTR was also liked by the public as a romantic hero. His chemistry with his co-actors including Sridevi, Jayaprada and other heroines of the time was remarkable. NTR not only made his mark in Tollywood but also had a stellar career in politics.
