With the closure of cinemas, there has been a boom in content on top platforms, be it regional or mainstream. With a lack of big box office collections, and audiences more accepting of actors who are not popular stars, this has prompted filmmakers to experiment with brave stories. Stories that otherwise would not have been possible to show on the big screen. And the making of the anthology series has taken this whole process of taking risky stories a step further. So here we’ve compiled a list of features from some of the most recent anthology series that tackle topics that are usually missing in the mainstream.
She Loves Me, She Loves Me No- Feels Like Ishq
Queer representation has always been at its peak in most Bollywood films. Either it’s topped with its portrayal of characters or there are depressing stories about their existence (which isn’t wrong). However, these types of films usually do not have a proper and ‘normal’ representation of these characters, which does not further differentiate them. One of the shorts from Netflix’s recent anthology series She Loves Me She Loves Me Not, written and directed by Sulagna Chatterjee and Danish Aslam respectively, does an admirable job of normalizing queer stories and making the story about their journey and journey. about their sexuality. Starring Sanjita Bhattacharya and Saba Azad, the short is something whose extended version will be a good thing to watch on the big screen.
Short Ghost Stories by Dibakar Banerjee
This is the reason why Dibakar Banerjee’s section stands out among ghost stories. On the face, it’s a post-apocalyptic zombie flick where the dead people of the big-city hundred-house eat the people of the small-town, bee-house. On closer look, it is a good description of the prevailing caste and class divide that is looming over us like an evil.
Short Stories of Lust by Karan Johar
Lust Stories took a bold step by focusing on stories revolving around women’s sexual desires and the need to express them without any shame. It doesn’t hesitate to open up about sex to its female leads, and one short that stands out for being a little more audacious is Karan Johar’s short starring Kiara Advani, Neha Dhupia and Vicky Kaushal. It follows a school teacher who discovers that she is dissatisfied with her post-marriage sexual experiences, which her husband fails to realize. So, she takes matters into her own hands by bringing a vibrator into her home, but a series of misfortunes expose her secret to her husband and mother-in-law. That’s when we see that she talks openly to her husband about women’s happiness and there is nothing to be ashamed of.
Wet Pachchi – Weird Tales
The third installment of this anthology film, Neeraj Ghaywan’s Geely Pachchi is one of the more recent productions which deals with homosexual relationships through two women Bharti and Priya portrayed by Konkona Sen Sharma and Aditi Rao Hydari respectively. While the former is well aware of his preferences, the latter is yet to discover himself, although his actions indicate that he has always been in love with women. This short story adds another important layer of caste-based discrimination that comes in the characters’ journey of finding their true selves.
Interview – Feel Like Ishq
This segment of the series, directed and written by Sachin Kundalkar and Arti Rawal, revolves around two men played by Zain Marie Khan and Neeraj Madhav respectively, who meet during a job interview. The former helps the latter break their shell of uncertainty and prepares for the interview while they wait for their turn, while the interview ends and the episode turns into a blossoming friendship. The story isn’t something we haven’t heard or seen, but it stands out for its complex take on class struggle without preaching about it. In short the working class struggle is shown without pushing the idea of overly hopeless or toxic positivity that one should always be content with less. This is something we would definitely love to see on the big screen.
