Friends advised me to keep quiet if I want President’s post: Satya Pal Malik

Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik has said that his friends had advised him not to criticize the BJP government as he could be made president or vice-president if he remained silent, but added that he “cares about these positions”. Not there.” Friends had advised me that I could be President or Vice President so I should keep quiet. But, I told him that I don’t care about these posts.” He was addressing a Kisan Samman ceremony organized by Kandela Khap and Majra Khap at Kandela village here on Sunday and said the post of governor was not important to him.

Malik has been quite vocal against the NDA government at the Center and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on several issues, including the three agriculture laws that have now been repealed. In January, he had claimed that when he went to meet the Prime Minister over the issue of farmers, the latter was arrogant and had a fight with him within five minutes.

Malik also called upon the farmers to unite to change the regime in New Delhi and form a government that suits them so that they do not have to demand anything from anyone. Malik said that after his term as governor ends, he will tour the country and unite the farmers.

He also justified the hoisting of “Nishan Sahib” at the Red Fort last year by alleged farmer agitators and said there was nothing wrong with it. Talking of scrapping of agricultural laws, he said the government has “compromised half-heartedly” with the farmers after which the protest sites were vacated but since then there has been no progress in the matter.

The Governor also said, “A friend of the Prime Minister is fulfilling the dream of buying wheat at affordable prices and building a godown in an area of 50 acres in Panipat”. Malik said the prime minister’s residence was only a few kilometers away from the site of the farmers’ protest on the Delhi border and a large number of farmers lost their lives during the agitation that lasted for more than a year.

“But no one came from the government’s side to offer condolences,” Malik said. He said that he never compromised on his principles and always raised the voice of farmers. He claimed that the peasant movement was the largest and longest such movement in history, which did not involve any kind of violence.

Malik said some leaders were jailed after the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, but the Prime Minister released them and offered them tea. Malik was the governor of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 when the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked and it was bifurcated into two union territories.
