French Open: Coco Gauff glad she put aside marine biologist’s dream to keep up with tennis

If fate had any other plans, Coco Gauff would be a marine biologist or sports psychologist, but the American teenager is happy to see tennis as her passion because she doesn’t imagine working a regular nine-to-five job.

18-year-old Gauff entered the second week of the French Open for the second year in a row after beating Kaya Kanepi 6-3 6-4 in the third round on Friday.

The American joked that playing tennis didn’t feel like a “proper job” and when asked to elaborate, she said: “When I think of a job, at least in America, I think That 9:00 and 5:00 and people are afraid to go to work. I’m not afraid of what I do.

“Obviously there are people in the world who love their jobs and there are a lot of people who don’t like their jobs. I’m lucky that my job is something I love to do, so I don’t see it as a job.

What she would choose if she had a job, Gough said: “When I was younger I’ve always wanted to be a marine biologist. As I got older, I realized how much school work was going to take, so I Checked it out in a way.

“I’d say I’d choose a marine biologist or a sports psychologist, but both of those fields take a lot of years in college and I’m not committed to it,” she said with a smile.

Gauff is the youngest player in the draw and after defeating Kanepi, who turned 37 in two weeks’ time, the teenager said she hopes to play at the same level as the Estonian when she reaches the age of three.

“It’s crazy that she’s 36 … playing at this level. She’s still playing really well, good tennis,” Gauff said.

“If I still want to play (at 36), I hope I’m playing at that level … It’s rare nowadays – you see players end their careers or play on their own terms. Me Glad he is able to play.”
