World number three Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarter-finals of the French Open after beating Spanish qualifier Bernabé Zapata Miralles here on Sunday.

Zverev won one marathon opening set in a dramatic tie-break and was forced to recover from a breakdown in the second and won 7-6 (11), 7-5, 6-3 at No. 131. miracle.
Miralles was making his first appearance in a Grand Slam quarter-final and, despite a nervous start, the Spaniard looked home on the big stage. He took advantage of any drop in Zverev’s level to ensure that the Germans were never comfortable but World 3’s greater firepower was ultimately enough to lead him to a two-hour, 45-minute victory.
Despite his lack of consistency throughout, it was Zverev’s ability to hit the ball with both wings that proved the difference on court Susan Lenglen.
He hit 34 winners from Zapata Miralles to just 13, but Zverev would hope to reduce his unforced error count to 63 for a quarter-final match with Carlos Alcaraz or Karen Khachanov.
A semifinalist at Roland Garros in 2021, Zverev now has a 16-4 record on clay in 2021 but is yet to secure a title this year. The five-time ATP Masters 1000 champion is hunting for his first Grand Slam in Paris, where he has now reached the quarterfinals four times.
