World number one Inga Swietec registered her 32nd consecutive win before reaching the quarter-finals after losing in the first set of the last-16 at the French Open after losing to injured Chinese teenager Zheng Qinwen on Monday.
Sweetek won 6-7 (5/7), 6-0, 6-2 to equal the third-best winning streak of the century set by Justin Henin 14 years ago.
“She played amazing tennis,” said Sweetek after reaching the quarterfinals for the third year in a row.
“I was surprised by some of his shots, his top spin was amazing. Many congratulations to him. I am happy to be back from a disappointing first set lead.
“I am proud to be in the tournament.”
In the opening set of 82 minutes, 74th-ranked Zheng saved five set points, two of them on his own, and then worked his way down 2/5 to take the top seed in the tiebreak.
As the 2020 Roland Garros champion’s streak looked in jeopardy, Zheng needed a medical timeout in the second set at 0-3 for a leg injury.
Zheng, who defeated 2018 champion Simona Halep in the fourth round, came back with a heavy right thigh brace and quickly dropped the second set.
Sweetek made a double break in the decider against her exhausted opponent, whose injury contributed to her 46 unforced errors, and would face US 11th seed Jessica Pegula for a place in the semi-finals.
