France to send ‘several hundred’ soldiers to Romania amid fears of Ukraine war

Defense Minister Florence Parly said on Saturday that France plans to send several hundred troops to Romania as part of a possible deployment to NATO’s eastern side, amid fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron recently expressed France’s “readiness to move forward, and to commit to new missions within the framework of NATO … in particular Romania”.

Parly told France Inter radio that she had gone to Romania on Thursday to discuss the issue. She said Romania was a “high tension area” that had to be “reassured”.

“We will be meeting with NATO members very soon,” he said, adding that Paris plans to send “several hundred men” to Romania as part of a “defensive alliance”. The Kremlin has deployed more than 100,000 troops and heavy armor with Ukraine. Border, according to West, who fears the Kremlin will stage an incursion.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Saturday that he would visit Ukraine with German counterpart Annalena Barbock on February 7-8. “I have assured Dimitro Kuleba (Ukrainian Foreign Minister) of our full support and solidarity with Ukraine,” he said.

Moscow has sought comprehensive security guarantees, including that Ukraine will never be allowed to join NATO. Those demands have been the subject of intense negotiations, with the West warning of far-reaching consequences if diplomacy fails and Russia strikes.
