France stabbing: Several hurt in knife attack at Paris central railway station, attacker ‘neutralised’

Paris: Several people were stabbed after a man brandished a knife at several commuters at a Paris central train station on Wednesday, according to French media reports. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin quoted media reports as saying that several people were injured in the attack before police “swiftly neutralised” the attacker.

Media reports, quoting unnamed police sources, said police opened fire on the attacker, who was armed with a knife, and wounded several people in the early hours of Wednesday. The suspect was shot several times by police and arrested after the attack at Gare du Nord at around 6.45am.

Interior Minister Darmanin initially confirmed via a tweet that the attacker wounded several people at the station, but gave no other details on their numbers or the extent of the injuries.

Paris police said the incident at the Gare du Nord station was now over, but gave no further details. Paris police said the man’s motives were not immediately clear.

Images shared by social media users showed armed police cordoning off the station.

The transport hub is one of the busiest in Europe, with Eurostar trains going to London and other northern Europe. French train firm SNCF said on its website that some train departures had resumed since the stabbing, with the station empty and a security perimeter set up.

The latest knife attack follows another at the Gare du Nord last February, when French police shot dead a man who stabbed two officers, suffering minor injuries. It was not believed to be related to terrorism.
