According to solid waste management rulesLocal authorities should set up material recovery facilities or secondary storage facilities, where the waste collected from households will be further separated and the various components of recyclable waste will be recovered for recycling or resale. This will enable informal or authorized waste collectors to segregate and collect recyclable materials such as paper, plastic, metal, glass and cloth from the waste. The city already has four garbage collection centres, where wet and dry waste is put into separate conveyor belts to take out the recyclable waste.
“We will set up the facilities as soon as we get the land from the MCG. The collected waste will be segregated, composted and the inactive produced will be sent to Bandhawadi from MRF for further processing,” said Sanjay Sharma, Deputy CEO, EcoGreen.
Ahuja on Friday chaired a meeting with MCG and Ecogreen officials, in which they also directed to ensure that no mixed waste is collected from any household. The commissioner said that if a resident gives mixed waste, the garbage collector should give it time to segregate and accept it only after segregation is done. The MCG started separate garbage collection in the city from Thursday.
Besides this, the MCG chief directed the officials to improve the secondary collection points. The city has 20 secondary waste collection points which will soon have boundary walls, separate entry and exit points and a cabin for the MCG enforcement teams.
