NOIDA: Four inmates have died in a fortnight at Nari Niketan, the city’s only shelter home for women, the latest on January 3, following which a probe has been ordered by the district magistrate.
The Sector 34 shelter that housed homeless women has been running without a warden for a month, TOI has learned. The dead have been identified as Sunita (45), Aradhna (54), Priyanka (25) and Ruby (30).
District Probationary Officer (DPO) Atul said, “The first death was reported on December 20 of Sunita. The second was of Aradhana on December 23. Priyanka died on December 30 and the second prisoner on January 3. Sony said.
Soni said that Sunita, Aradhana and Priyanka were admitted to the district hospital for treatment two-three days before their death. Ruby died in the shelter. “All the four women were admitted to the shelter home in the last six months. We made several attempts to reunite them with their families, but we could not.”
The police performed the last rites of all four. “The autopsy of Sunita and Aradhana revealed that they died of a heart attack. Priyanka died due to prolonged illness and Ruby had tuberculosis,” said Gyan Singh, SHO, Sector 24 police station.
Sources in Nari Niketan said that all the four women were mentally handicapped and they were medically checked up during the admission.
At present, there are 116 prisoners in Nari Niketan, with a total capacity of 150. “At present, there are 14 caretakers in the shelter home. But there is no warden there. The last one is dropped in the first week of December and the new one will join soon. Most of the prisoners are mentally challenged and the deaths happened in the absence of the warden,” Soni said.
The order of inquiry into the deaths was given by the District Magistrate. Suhas Liu, “A team has been formed to ascertain whether there has been any negligence on the part of the staff of the women’s shelter home,” the DM’s order said.
