The Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrested controversial former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini late on Wednesday night in connection with an alleged disproportionate assets case. Vigilance Bureau sources said Saini reached the bureau office around 8 pm in connection with the investigation of the case and was arrested after questioning.

On Monday, bureau teams raided his residence in Chandigarh to attach his property. This was done after a fresh FIR was registered against him in the case and various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act were invoked. Officials claimed that the case was registered by the Vigilance Department against the former top police officer after collecting fresh evidence of disproportionate assets.

A local court in Mohali had earlier issued orders to attach the property of a house in Chandigarh’s Sector 20, where Saini lives, in connection with the case. The attachment orders were issued by Additional District and Sessions Judge PS Grewal on July 16.

According to vigilance bureau sources, Saini had allegedly bought the property in a prime neighborhood of Chandigarh in someone else’s name through money ‘wrongly’. Sources said that documents and evidence have been seized, which establishes that the former DGP had acquired these properties through illegal means.

The controversial former top police officer is also facing charges of murder of CITCO junior engineer Balwant Singh Multani, who was also the son of a former IAS officer, when Saini was serving as SSP Chandigarh.

Saini was booked by the Mohali police under section 302 (punishment for murder) of the IPC at Mataur police station and before that, Saini had managed extensive orders for anticipatory bail.
