Former Haryana Chief Minister Omprakash Chautala has been sentenced to 4 years in jail by the court in the disproportionate assets case. Also imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh. Out of this Rs 5 lakh will be given to CBI. Failure to pay the fine will result in additional imprisonment of 6 months. In the court, the defense did not accept the plea of sympathy on the ground of disability. The court also ordered to seize the properties of Hailey Road, Panchkula, Gurugram, Asola.

CBI’s lawyer Ajay Gupta said that the accused demanded 10 days’ time to get the medical report done. But the court said that the medical tests that have to be done, should be done in jail. He was taken into custody after the sentencing. His son Abhay Chautala and grandson Arjun were also in the court. Abhay Chautala said that he will go to the High Court. Will consult with lawyers now.

Chautala’s lawyer argued
Earlier, after the arguments of lawyers on the sentence on Thursday in Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi, the decision was reserved. The counsel appearing for Chautala has argued in the court that he is 87 years old and has been ill for a long time. He has a certificate of 60 percent disability, but now he has become 90 percent disabled. Health remains poor and is unable to change even his own clothes. Earlier, he has been sentenced to jail in the JBT recruitment case. He has passed 10th and 12th while in jail. At the same time, the counsel for CBI has argued that giving less punishment to the former CM will send a wrong message.

Significantly, Chautala was convicted by the court on May 21. The CBI had produced 106 witnesses against Chautala in the disproportionate assets case. The CBI had registered this case against the former CM in 2005. In 2010, the charge sheet was filed in the court. After the chargesheet, OP Chautala’s statement was recorded on January 16, 2018. The CBI had registered three separate cases of disproportionate assets against Chautala and his sons.

this is the whole matter
The disproportionate assets case was registered by the CBI in 2005 on the complaint of Congress leader Shamsher Singh Surjewala. The CBI had filed a charge sheet that OP Chautala’s income was 189 per cent more than his income of Rs 3.22 crore during the stipulated period. Ajay Chautala had 339.27 percent more assets than his income. Between May 1993 and May 2006, his income stood at Rs 8.17 crore.

Abhay Chautala’s assets were five times more than his income of Rs 22.89 crore as per income tax data between 2000 and 2005. The ED has attached assets worth more than 6 crores in the case. This includes properties in Delhi, Panchkula and Sirsa.

Tejakheda Farm House was seized
The ED had seized some part of OP Chautala’s Tejakheda farm house on December 4, 2019. At that time there were CRPF personnel with the ED. This action was taken at 7 am. After this, the ED also collected the details of the assets of former CM’s wife Snehlata and daughter-in-law Kanta Chautala. However, the action was termed as politically motivated by the Chautala family. The properties of Chautala in Delhi and Panchkula have also been seized by the ED.
