Former cricketer Sehwag’s question why crackers were burst after Pakistan’s victory despite the ban

New Delhi: Virender Sehwag on Monday told the ‘hypocrisy’ behind the ban on crackers on Diwali. According to a tweet by the former Indian opener, some residents celebrated India’s 10-wicket defeat after many people accused of bursting firecrackers after the India-Pakistan match in the T20 World Cup.

The former cricketer burst implied firecrackers as some residents may be in support of the Pakistan cricket team in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 against Pakistan.

The former Indian cricketer questioned the “hypocrisy” behind such an act, ‘What is the harm in bursting crackers on Diwali’ when it can be done before the festival.

Gautam Gambhir made one such tweet, alleging that crackers celebrating Pakistan’s victory ‘cannot be Indians’ with the hashtag #Shameful.

Delhi resident Sehwag’s reaction comes after the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) in September ordered a complete ban on the sale and bursting of all types of firecrackers in the national capital till January 1, 2022.

Reason behind cracker ban

The DPCC has directed the District Magistrates and Deputy Commissioners of Police to implement the instructions and submit daily action taken reports.

Given the significant link between air pollution and respiratory infections, bursting of crackers is not conducive to larger community health under the prevailing pandemic crisis.

“Several experts have indicated the possibility of another surge of COVID-19 and mass gatherings by bursting of firecrackers will result in not only conglomeration of people violating social distancing norms, but also high levels of air pollution will also lead to serious health issues in Delhi,” the order read.

Delhi, which sees a significant amount of pollution during the winter months due to stubble burning in neighboring states, is spoiled by the bursting of crackers. This makes it difficult for the health of the general public, especially those who already suffer from respiratory diseases, including asthma.

not just air pollution

Apart from the widespread air pollution that fills the air with metal particles, dangerous toxins, harmful chemicals and fumes. Some toxins never fully decompose or decompose, poisoning everything they come into contact with.

Firecrackers also cause noise pollution which can lead to hearing loss, stress, heart disease and high blood pressure. Sound is measured in decibels, anything below 70 or below the safe level for human ears but anything about 85 decibels is considered dangerous. Fireworks decibels can reach up to 125 decibels, which is really unsafe.
