Former Congress councilor Ishrat Jahan walked out of Tihar Jail here on Wednesday evening after being granted bail in the Northeast Delhi riots conspiracy case. Jahan, who was lodged in Mandoli jail, was released around 7.45 pm on Wednesday, a senior jail official said.
Jahan was granted bail by a Delhi court on Monday in connection with the larger conspiracy behind the February 2020 North East Delhi riots.
Jahan, along with several others, has been booked under anti-terrorism law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) – for allegedly being the “mastermind” of the February 2020 riots in which 53 people were killed More 700 injured. Violence had erupted during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Apart from Jahan, activists Khalid Saifi, Umar Khalid, JNU students Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita, Jamia Coordination Committee member Safoora Zargar, former AAP councilor Tahir Hussain and many others have also been booked under the stringent law in the case. .
