‘For my Family, Me Being Pregnant… It was Embarrassing’: Warner’s Wife Recalls Traumatic Phase After Sandpaper Gate

Cricket fans will always remember March 24, 2018 as a dark day in the history of the game. It was the infamous Sandpaper Gate incident that shook the entire cricket fraternity that day. Australia’s then captain Steven Smith, opener David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were found guilty of ball tampering during the Cape Town Test against South Africa.

Heavy restrictions were imposed on the Australian trio. This infamous incident proved to be the most challenging phase for the cricketers and their family members. But David Warner’s wife Candice probably suffered the most. Apart from the ball tampering incident, there was another incident which left an indelible mark on Candice’s mind. During that infamous Test, some South African fans were seen wearing Sonny Bill Williams masks to provoke Candice. Candice and ex-rugby league star Williams were reportedly photographed in 2007 in a cubicle in the men’s bathroom.

Candice recalled the painful chapter, revealing that it was “tough” to deal with the reaction of the South African fans.

“For me and my family, I was pregnant at the time and no one knew, my two little girls and my mom there — it was embarrassing. It broke my heart. It was … it was hard. Standing there It was hard to support David, but I knew I had to. I knew I couldn’t leave the stadium — because if I did, David would know everything affected me. And then it They would have had an impact,” Candice Warner told news.com.au.

David Warner had to face a 12-month ban after the ball-tampering scandal. Warner had to step down as the vice-captain of the Australian cricket team. The southpaw was also banned from participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2018.
