In Goa, the dropout rate for boys has always been high, with academics saying the early employment opportunities provided by sectors such as tourism and mining in the state are factors.
However, the difference between the dropout rate between boys and girls as thrown out by the U-DISE report is a matter of concern.
The gap is just as wide when it comes to repeating a class. Here too, boys are twice as likely to flank and repeat in ninth and tenth grades. The recurrence rate for boys is 9.4%, which is almost twice that for girls, 5.4%.

However, in terms of dropout rate, Goa’s average 10% is much better than the national 16%.
In the past, Jose Remedios Rebelo, the former president of the state board, has recorded his concerns over schools detaining students at the ninth grade level, especially urban ones. It is believed that some institutes practice this to register a better pass percentage in the class X public examination.
According to the U-DISE report for 2019-20, after repeaters and dropouts, more than 95% of students who clear Class X in Goa transfer to a higher secondary school.
