Guwahati: Assam Police recovers limited single edition Hublot luxury watch of football legend Diego Maradona From Charaidev District Inn Upper Assam Saturday morning.
Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta confirmed that the recovered watch belonged to the Argentine footballer and was stolen from the vault of Maradona’s Dubai home.
Later in a media briefing, Sivasagar SP Rakesh Roshan Said that Wajid Hussain, a resident of Sivasagar district, who used to work as a domestic help in the football star’s house, had stolen the watch and has been apprehended by the police. He said Hussain was in Dubai since 2016.
But a police case is yet to be registered in Assam as the state police is waiting Dubai Police giving feedback. Assam Police said Hussain used to work at Maradona’s Dubai home.
Mahanta said in a tweet that as informed by Dubai Police through the central agency, Hussain had stolen a watch bearing Maradona’s signature and fled to Assam. “Today at 4:00 am we arrested Wajid from his residence in Sibsagar. A limited edition watch has been recovered from him… an expensive Hublot watch… Maradona… Dubai… Assam Police Random Sounds like words, don’t they? But today all these words come together nicely, telling the story of the successful international collaboration between Dubai Police and @assampolice,” he tweeted.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also tweeted, “In an act of international cooperation @assampolice has coordinated with @dubaipoliceHQ through Indian Federal LEA to recover a legacy @hublot watch belonging to the legendary footballer Late Diego Maradona And one can be arrested. wajid hussain, Follow-up legal action is being taken.”
As per the information available on the internet, Sivasagar SP said that the price of the generic version of the watch is more than Rs 15 lakhs. “This is a very precious watch and the exact price cannot be assessed,” he said.
He said, “This watch was a single version specially made for Maradona. One such watch is available in the market but it is not as exclusive.”
Police in Sivasagar were alerted about the accused by Assam’s special DGP (law and order) GP Singh on Friday. “There was information that Wajid Hussain had fled Dubai with Maradona’s belongings. Based on the details shared with us, we started the operation last night,” Roshan said. He said the exact time when the watch was stolen is not known.
Roshan said that the accused was not at his residence in Sivasagar during the raids, but was found at his in-laws’ house at Moranhat in nearby Charaideo district. The SP said the watch recovered by the police team had Maradona’s signature and also mentions his trademark jersey number 10 and has the logo on his back.
Police say that more seizures may be made in the investigation. Roshan said, “The watch is only one of the items stolen. According to the information, he (Hussain) used to work at Maradona’s house as a domestic help. The accused is not cooperating with the police. We rule Will work accordingly.” Roshan said that till now no police case has been registered at the local level in Sivasagar. “If the Dubai Police wants him, we will hand him over to them. Otherwise we will do our own investigation,” he said.
Hussain’s mother said that her son broke up with her after their marriage in 2005. “He hasn’t come home for a long time,” he said. According to him, Hussain had come to Sivasagar about three months ago.
