FM Sitharaman assures ‘full support’ for Sri Lanka’s economic recovery

New DelhiFinance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has assured her “full support” and cooperation to Sri Lanka to overcome the ongoing economic crisis. Sitharaman gave the assurance to Sri Lankan High Commissioner Milinda Moragoda when the ambassador met her on Monday. The Sri Lankan High Commission said in a statement that India’s Finance Minister assured the High Commissioner of “full support and cooperation in the process of economic recovery in Sri Lanka”.

This was the latest in Morgoda’s series of meetings with Sitharaman on India’s economic cooperation and aid to Sri Lanka in the wake of the economic crisis. He last met her on May 27.

“High Commissioner Morgoda once again thanked Minister Sitharaman for the continuation of the assistance being extended by India to Sri Lanka, and especially the USD 55 million granted on 10 June for the import of 65,000 metric tonnes of urea required for the present Thanks for the early arrangement of a separate line of credit of the farming season in Sri Lanka,” the High Commission said.

“In response, Minister Sitharaman assured High Commissioner Moragoda of her full cooperation in the economic recovery process in Sri Lanka, while expressing hope that Sri Lanka will recover very soon given the resilience of its people.”

Moragoda also met 15 European envoys based in New Delhi who are concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka.

Ambassadors of Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Ukraine and the High Commissioner to Malta attended the meeting on Tuesday.

The High Commission said Moragoda briefed the Heads of Mission about the current economic and political developments in Sri Lanka, particularly the plans for stabilization and improvement of the Sri Lankan economy.
