Five Trinamool workers arrested in Tripura, BJP claims they are drug smugglers

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) claimed that five of its supporters were arrested in Tripura after midnight on Monday, allegedly without any reason. However, the BJP opposed this saying that those arrested were drug smugglers.

The five arrested have been sent to police custody. TMC fears that more arrests may happen.

TMC general secretary Kunal Ghosh tweeted, ‘Wrong cases are being filed against TMC workers. We condemn it. Trinamool Congress is with him. Such threats cannot stop them.

West Bengal Law Minister Moloy Ghatak, who arrived in Tripura on Tuesday, also expressed similar sentiments, saying false allegations were leveled against TMC workers.

One of the family members of the arrested man told News18: “We are under a lot of stress. They are sending police, CRPF at midnight. They are trying to intimidate us because we are TMC workers.

Ashish Lal Singh, a local TMC leader in Tripura, said, “We have held a protest today and they will not be able to stop us.”

The TMC on Tuesday held a peaceful protest against the “illegal” arrest of party workers. “We strongly condemn such undemocratic steps of @BJP4Tripura government,” the party tweeted.

Meanwhile, the BJP said that the five arrested were drug smugglers. Party leader Nabendu Bhattacharya said, “TMC has no organisation. Those who have been arrested are drug smugglers.”
