GUWAHATI: The Assam Police on Friday night arrested five members of a Bangladesh-based radical Islamist group, Ansar al-Islam, known as the Bangladesh chapter of al-Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent (AQIS), in different parts of Barpeta district. did.
One of those arrested is Saiful Islam alias Haroon Rashid alias Mohammad Suman, a Bangladeshi national and a resident of Narayanganj district in the neighboring country.
DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahant said Saiful Islam was working as a teacher at Dhakliyapara Masjid in Barpeta district.
“Saiful Islam, after entering India, is inspiring the youth of a particular community towards jihadi and religious fundamentalism in different parts of Assam and has already spread its roots in the state,” Mahanta said.
The other four are Khairul Islam (27), Badshah Suleman Khan (28) and Naushad Ali (40) of Kalagachia. Taimur Rahman Khan (54) Howley K.
The Assam Police said in a statement that Saiful Islam successfully persuaded and motivated the four to join the module of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), which is the old name of Ansar al-Islam. The jihadist activities and illegal activities of Al-Qaeda and its related organization.
The DGP said that the police have recovered documents along with jihadi literature and several electronic devices including mobiles, laptops, pen drives.
“The modus operandi of the organization was found to be very sophisticated, which we have not come across in the past in the case of other terrorist groups in the state. “There were some other members of this module as well, but they managed to escape,” Mahant said.
Mahanta said the special branch of the Assam Police was conducting an intelligence operation on this module since September last year.
The five were produced in the court on Saturday.
All of them have been sent to police custody for further investigation.
He said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) would probably take over the probe so that a detailed probe could be conducted in the state and other parts of the country.
He added that international agencies may also join the investigation as there may be links with organizations from countries other than Bangladesh.
