Five members of the Joint Committee on Personal Data Protection Bill, including its chairperson Meenakshi Lekhi, were on Wednesday inducted into the Union Council of Ministers. Besides Lekhi, four others who have been made ministers include Lok Sabha member Ajay Bhatt and Rajya Sabha members Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Bhupendra Yadav and Ashwini Vaishnav.

The committee, constituted in December 2019, has an effective strength of 18 members – 19 from the Lok Sabha and nine from the Rajya Sabha. The panel has held several meetings and called on representatives from Twitter, Facebook, Google and e-commerce major Amazon.

The draft Data Protection Bill proposes to ban people from using their personal information without their explicit consent. Its purpose is to protect personal information, define the obligations of the data processor, rights of individuals and provide for penalties for violations. In March this year, the committee was given time till the upcoming monsoon session to submit its report. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday underwent a major overhaul of his council of ministers, with 15 cabinet ministers and 28 ministers of state, including fresh faces and those who were promoted, were sworn in.
