Five-decade-old tree felled for storm water drain work in Adyar | Chennai News – Times of India

CHENNAI: Greater Chennai Corporation contractors, who are constructing a storm water drain on the Fourth Main Road in Adyar’s Gandhi Nagar, cut a five-decade- old rain tree on Tuesday without getting the approvals of the district green committee and the environment department, residents alleged.
Residents told TOI that their complaints to the assistant engineer and other officials in the GCC had evoked no response.
“We saw workers begin to chop the branches on Monday. We told them that they cannot chop the tree without permission from green committee. However, they went ahead and felled the tree on Tuesday, violating all the rules,” said T D Babu, member of the district green committee.
“It is shocking that they have no regard for rules and laws. The GCC should take action against the official involved in this illegal activity,” Babu said.
Meera Ravikumar, a resident, said, “There is no inundation problem on this road. We don’t need such a drain that is being set up by chopping a tree. We are very upset that they don’t care about the rules.”
