Thiruvananthapuram: A group of fishermen who ventured out to sea from Azhikkal port in Kollam district narrowly escaped after their boat caught fire. Police said that the accident happened during the early hours of Wednesday. The name of the boat involved in the accident is Velankanni Amma, owned by Augustin of Anu Bhavan in Dhalavapuram. There were nine fishermen in the boat. They went to sea at about 12:30 in the afternoon. About an hour later the boat caught fire when it was about three nautical miles from shore.
The fleeing fishermen told the police that the fire was suspected to have been caused by a leak in the LP gas stove in the boat as the fire started when they were turning on the chulha for making tea.
