Noted filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi passed away on September 23, 2018 after a prolonged illness. The filmmaker had to undergo regular dialysis after battling with kidney cancer and a serious case of urinary track infection (UTI). She was 64 years old at the time of her death. On the eve of his third death anniversary, his mother, veteran artist Lalita Lajmi spoke about his life and death. The renowned painter said that Kalpana got help from several actors from the film industry during her long illness. she said Alia Bhatt And Soni Razdan was very close to the filmmaker and helped him till the end.

Talking to Pinkvilla, Lajmi said, ‘She had to undergo regular dialysis. The first person to offer help was Aamir Khan. He sent checks directly to his account. Some other directors also contributed. Soni Razdan and Alia Bhatt paid for his dialysis till the end. He was very close to imagination. Actually Alia was born in front of him. I am deeply grateful to all the people who helped. There were other expenses as well. Thankfully, her medical insurance helped a lot.”

In the interview, Lajmi also opened up about Kalpana’s relationship with legendary singer Bhupen Hazarika. The artist said that while he didn’t mind Kalpana being in a live-in relationship with Hazarika, he noticed their age difference. She also said that the singer was hot-tempered and disregarded Kalpana.

Kalpana Lajmi made several women-centric films including Rudali, Daman, Chingari and Ek Pal. Rudali was the Indian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 66th Academy Awards in 1994.
