First look at the new Emoji 14.0: When will they land on Apple iPhone and Android phones?

New emojis are on the way! Like clockwork, ahead of the annual World Emoji Day on July 17th, we have a first look at the Unicode Consortium’s draft of Emoji 14.0 release candidates. Some of the new emoji include a saluting face, prickly lips, low battery as well as a focus on gender inclusion. Emojipedia confirms that this is only a draft list and changes may occur before final approval expected in September this year. When do these new emojis come to you Apple Iphone and Android phone? That’s expected to happen with one of the operating system releases either later this year, or sometime early next year. By then, we will be well into the Apple iOS 15 and Android 12 lifecycle.

So, what’s new in Emoji 14.0? The new emoji in the draft list include a molten face, a face with open eyes and a hand over a mouth, a peep-eyed face, a salami face, a face with a dotted line, a face with tears held back and a face with a slanted face. Person with is a gender-inclusive alternative to the existing emoji for Crown Princess and Prince. The coral emoji should be relevant to the discussion on climate change. Pregnant men and pregnant individuals are new and believe that pregnancy is possible for some transgender men and non-binary people. These are additions to the existing pregnant woman emoji and the gender inclusive dancer emoji. It is a continuation of years of efforts to make emoji representation and interaction more inclusive across genders, religions, ethnicities and regions.

When will my Apple iPhone get a new emoji? The earliest support for Emoji 14 is expected later this year, with final approval being confirmed with an expectation sometime in September. But in all likelihood, iOS 15 will likely bring these to Apple iPhones in early 2022, which means one of the updates will roll out in the January to March window. Emoji 13.1 arrived on Apple iOS in April of this year—it’s also important to note that the Apple iPhone release was delayed by a month last year.

When will my Android phone get the new emoji? It is expected that Google will be able to integrate it in Android 12 in the October-December window this year. And these will be the first Google Pixel phones to get more inclusive emoji as part of the monthly Android 12 update. But in all likelihood, Android phones from most brands, including Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus and others, should expect the Emoji 14.0 pack as early as 2022, around the time the Apple iPhone gets the same. The most recent emoji update, which is Emoji 13.1, was approved in September 2020, and arrived on Google Pixel phones in December 2020.
