First crop of Indian pompano fish in Odisha from sea cage cultivation. Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

BHUBANESWAR: For the first time, Indian pompano, a species of marine fish, was harvested from sea cages grown from Bahabalapur in Balasore district in the state. The marine cages were constructed by ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) with the help of National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) for the cultivation of fish species on a pilot basis.
On 8 August, about 12,000 advanced fingers of Indian pompano were stocked in seven cages at the sea cage farm in Bahbalapur. These fingers were released in offshore cages by the Balasore MP. Pratap Chandra Sarangi. NFDB has funded this pilot project.
Each cage received between 1650 and 1700 fingers. The average body weight of these fingers was 50 g. “After incessant rains during the second week of this month, the flood waters entered the sea. The ingress of land pollutants into the marine environment led to an increase in the level of suspended and dissolved solids and a tremendous increase in the demand for oxygen. As a result, the amount of dissolved oxygen in and around the cages decreased and this forced us to harvest early,” said CMFRI scientist Gyanranjan Das.
Harvesting was done on Saturday, 40 days after stocking fingerlings. Over 1.7 tonnes of production was achieved from an initial biomass of 0.59 tonnes, indicating a nearly three-fold increase within a period of 40 days. “Survival was 87 percent and the average body weight at harvest was 170 grams. The daily weight gain was three grams,” said the scientist.
Dash said that he had not seen such daily growth growth before. “This first pilot demonstration of Indian pompano farming in offshore cages will help the state increase productivity from marine cages. There is a demand for this delicious fish in the market. Farmers can get good profit from this Marine Cage Culture,” she added.
Dash said they have plans to install eight more sea cages in October and 15 more in November. “After November, we could close 30 sea cages” Bahabalapur coast For display and cultivation of Indian pompano. Farmers will learn from us and adopt this cage farming in marine ecosystem in future.”
