The death toll due to the outbreak of viral fever and dengue in this western Uttar Pradesh district rose to 51 on Saturday as an 11-year-old girl succumbed to the disease, even as central and state officials reviewed the situation. Officials of the Uttar Pradesh government, including Principal Secretary (Medical Education) Alok Kumar, visited the Government Medical College here as well as some of the affected areas and inquired about the condition of the patients.

The caretaker CMS of the college, Alok Kumar Sharma said that an 11-year-old girl died during treatment late in the evening.

Along with the new ward that started on Saturday, 179 new patients were admitted in different wards, while 54 were discharged after recovery.

Sharma said that so far a total of 433 patients have been admitted to the Medical College Hospital.

Known for bangles and glass work, Firozabad is about 50 km from Agra and 320 km from state capital Lucknow.

The district has been battling an outbreak of dengue and deadly viral fever for the past two weeks, mostly of the victims.

According to officials, some similar cases have been found in the neighboring states of Mathura, Agra and Mainpuri.

Meanwhile, the district authorities have launched a drive to stop the breeding of mosquitoes.

District Magistrate Chandra Vijay Singh issued instructions to the officials of the Municipal Corporation and Health Department to remove the stagnant water.

Acting on the order, the employees of the Municipal Corporation started door-to-door investigation of mosquito breeding on Saturday.

Principal Secretary (Medical Education) Alok Kumar also went to Salai Primary Health Center and then visited Abbas Nagar – one of the affected areas — from where he admitted eight-year-old Hashmi and 11-year-old Zeenat. University.

Nodal Officer Sudhir Kumar Bobde also visited the medical college and other affected areas.

A six-member team from the Union Health Ministry, which was sent here, held several meetings to review the situation and suggest remedial measures.
