BJP’s new Bengal unit chief Sukanto Majumdar has taken charge at a time when the party is trying to learn from the debacle of the recent assembly elections as well as deal with the loss of big names like Babul Supriyo.
Speaking to News18 hours after he was booked for protesting in front of CM Mamata Banerjee’s residence, Majumdar says the FIR is a “medal” for him. Majumdar also took a jibe at his party colleague and Union Minister John Barla’s demand for statehood for North Bengal and the upcoming by-polls.

Why do you think you have been selected for this position?
I am not the right person to answer this question. Senior leaders like JP Nadda have given this responsibility to me. I am short karyakarta (activist). I am glad that he has given me this responsibility and I will do my best under his guidance.
You are from North Bengal. Union Minister and Alipurduar MP John Barla has raised his voice for partition. What is your take on that?
I am the BJP state president of not only North Bengal but of the whole of Bengal. The party line is clear at the state and central level. We want to see Bengal as envisioned by Syama Prasad Mookerjee and his associates. Bengal cannot be divided.
There are many reasons due to which the people of North Bengal believe that they are deprived of development for the last 70 years. As MP of the region, it is the responsibility of John Barla to present the spirit of that region to our leadership.
What you said is against the demand of John Barla…
I have already told you that (statehood to North Bengal) is the sentiment of the people of this region. They have been denied. There has been development in and around Kolkata. It is the duty of the MP of an area to represent the voice of the people. He (Barla) has done the same.
How will you resolve this demand if BJP comes to power?
Development is the solution. When we come to power, we will decentralize development. There will be all round development.
What is your opinion on the recent election results? AAP has come down from 77 to 71 seats.
We are analyzing the results. We have had a long discussion. Obviously, there is a mistake somewhere. Otherwise we would have won. Why would we have lost if there was no mistake?
TMC leader and Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee has said that BJP will cease to exist…
This is the mindset of Abhishek Banerjee. They believe they can buy people. We are an ideological cadre based party. They don’t understand it because they have no ideology. The soul of BJP is its workers. We have an ideology that cannot be destroyed. Nehru also respected From, indira From and Rajiv From Tried and failed to destroy our ideology. I don’t think Abhishek Banerjee and Mamata Banerjee are more powerful than them.
How will you stop the exodus of leaders from the BJP?
We will not share our plan with the media. Will follow our ideology. Our workers are our strength.
you were sitting dharna In front of CM residence for late BJP leader Manas Saha. A case has been registered against you. Saha’s daughter has said in the FIR that her death was the result of the hospital’s negligence.
The case against me is about my medals from Mamata Banerjee’s police and administration. We will also register a case against the police officers present there. We are working for the restoration of democracy.
How do you see BJP in the by-elections?
We know that people will vote for us and we will win.
Your predecessor Dilip Ghosh had a style of his own and was always in controversy. Will you follow his line?
I will follow the line of Bharatiya Janata Party.
Why TMC was not given permission in Tripura?
The answer will be given by the Tripura unit. Abhishek Banerjee should go to every state under BJP to find out how well the administration is behaving. They should learn from us.
