Finance Minister asks taxpayers for transparency, introduces GST compliance – Times of India

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman On Friday urged the tax officials to ensure transparency and remove any room for discretion and said goods and services Tax ,GST) has introduced compliance and helped in removing the widening and overlap of various taxes.
Addressing a gathering on GST Day, the FM also congratulated the officers for their hard work, which ensured compliance and helped in bridging the gap and garnering much needed revenue. July 1 has been designated as GST Day as the most ambitious tax reform measure was launched on this day five years ago.
Sitharaman said, “Even if we had not met last year, the audience would have had a persuasive aura. Thank you for the hard work each one of you have put in over the last five years.” Many challenges in the last five years
He cited the technology and adaptability challenges of 2019 and recalled the Centre’s efforts to make the Tax Payments Committee sit with officials dealing with GST to ensure that the challenges are addressed.
The FM said that the two arms – the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) – Must be nimble in its efforts to ensure trust for taxpayers so that they feel that their inputs are being respected. The FM said the CBIC had responded to the suggestions of the industry and the tax arbitration that existed between the states before the GST rollout was removed.
He said that concrete action against thieves and strong economic reforms have ensured that GST receipts remain strong. “With the economic recovery, anti-theft activities, especially action against fake billers are contributing to the increase in GST.”
