Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao retires, thanks fans in heartfelt video

New Delhi: Flippino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao announced on Wednesday that we will retire from the sport to focus on his political career. Pacquiao, 42, has ambitions to become the country’s next president.

Referring to it as one of the toughest decisions, Pacquiao’s video message on Twitter states that he is heard saying, “It’s hard for me to accept that for me as a boxer. time is over”.

Pacquiao is the only boxer to have held world titles in eight different divisions. He announced his retirement in a 14-minute long emotional video on his social media, thanking fans across the world for the memories.

“Thank you for changing my life, when my family was in despair, you gave us hope, you gave me a chance to get out of poverty,” Pacquiao said in the video. “Because of you, I was able to inspire people around the world. Because of you, I have got the courage to change more lives. I can never forget what I have done and achieved in my life that I can imagine.” Can’t even. I just heard the last bell. Boxing is over.”

Pacquiao entered politics in 2010 as a congressman before being elected to the Senate representing southern Sarangani province. The two-time Congressman was elected to the upper house in 2016 for a six-year term. Earlier this month, he accepted the nomination of his political party and announced that he would run for President of the Philippines in the May 2022 elections.

Pacquiao’s formal ally was President Rodrigo Duterte, Boxer accusing Duterte’s administration of worsening corruption in the Philippines and promising to fight poverty, also warning that he would jail corrupt politicians.

Pacquiao came from a poor family and worked odd jobs to provide for his family, as a teenager he came to Manila where he was introduced to competitive boxing. He debuted in professional boxing as a junior flyweight in 1995 at the age of 16, struggling to break out of abject poverty to become one of the world’s highest-paid athletes. Pacquiao ended his 26-year, 72-fight career with 62 wins, eight losses and two draws. Of those 62 victories, 39 were by knockout and 23 by decision. He won 12 world titles.
