FIFA slashes fines on Mexico for raising anti-gay slogans at games

MEXICO CITY: The world football body has agreed to reduce Mexico’s sentence for anti-gay chants heard during Olympic qualifying matches in March, Mexican football officials said on Wednesday.

The Mexican Football Federation said it had been notified by FIFA that the Mexico men’s team would be required to play only one game without fans instead of the two originally imposed.

The ban will go into effect on 2 September, when the Mexico national team plays Jamaica at the start of the region’s World Cup qualifiers. The match will take place at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The Mexican Football League petitioned FIFA to reconsider the original sanctions on the grounds that the punishment would affect the Mexico national team, even if the chants were recited in the game played by the Sub23 team.

Soccer officials have attempted to stop anti-gay chants at the Mexican national team’s matches.
