Some areas of Mangaluru have faced floods due to clogging of rain water drains at the peak of the rains. Suresh Udupa of Malemar thought he had enough.
Residents of Kottara outpost, Malemar, Maladi and adjoining areas have been victims of such artificial floods every year.
Suresh has lifted his 1,000 square foot home using over 200 jacks. A company from Uttar Pradesh was selected for the job, Suresh told TOI.
“The house has been raised by three feet by providing a high plinth beam to the foundation of the house. The work started on December 9 and is now in its final stages. The contractors have successfully lifted the house without causing cracks in the walls, pillars, ceiling, furniture and electrical appliances,” said Suresh, a retired banker. “Twelve laborers have completed the work on a contract of Rs 250 per sq ft.
Suresh built his house about 20 years ago. “We have suffered due to floods in recent years. Even sewage from underground drainage entered the houses in this area. There is no drainage system for rain water as a major drain in the area has not been cleaned properly. Due to accumulation of mud in the rainy drains, there is an artificial flood during the rainy season.
He also blamed the construction of flyovers on the national highway for the floods.
