PUNE: At least two flights were diverted, while over a dozen were delayed after a fault in the circuit of lights located on the side of the runway Pune Airport this evening.
Airport sources told TOI that while the operation was slowly resuming and there had been five landings since 7:30 pm, the work on the lighting of the runway was underway and being carried out by the Indian Air Force. The airport’s runways and air traffic control are managed by the Air Force.
“After the recarpeting works of the runway, IAF is currently working on the illumination of the runway. Currently some temporary lights are being used as per the information we have. One of the circuits of the runway edge light developed a snag resulting in diversion and delay. The lights at the airport are on only from 6 pm to 8 pm. However, the situation is returning to normal and now flights have started landing. Arrivals have been affected more than departures,” an airport source told TOI.
Between 6 pm and 9 pm, 12 arrivals and around 10 departures were delayed due to delays of over an hour. One Air India The flight coming from Delhi to Pune was diverted to Hyderabad, while SpiceJet The flight coming from Kolkata was diverted to Mumbai. Marhatta Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture President Sudhir Mehta was on the Air India flight. “We are currently in Hyderabad and airline officials have said that the flight will take off for Pune in about half an hour. The pilot announced the diversion of the flight, saying there was a problem with the runway lighting at the Pune airport. These developments show how desperately the city needs a new airport,” Mehta told TOI.
Runway edge lights are used to mark the edge of a runway after sunset or during inclement weather conditions.
“They rescheduled the Kolkata flight several times and now it has been diverted. My parents, who are senior citizens, are waiting at the airport for hours, Tania Roy, whose parents are scheduled to fly to Kolkata at 7 pm, told TOI.
Sources said that there is still chaos at the airport and many flights are still to land or take off.
