Counterfeit currency is one such problem which can have a lasting impact on the economic condition of the country. While the current notes in use after demonetisation in 2016 have a multi-step feature of checks to avoid duplication, there is still a possibility of counterfeit notes coming your way. Shahid Kapoor’s recent web series Farzi threw light on the issue of fake currency. However, unlike the series, there is less chance of creating a ‘super note’ that is more similar to the actual notes. You should be aware of some checks that you can do and find out whether the 100, 500 or 2000 rupee notes in your hands are genuine or not.

1. View Watermark: All Indian currency notes bear a watermark which can be seen when held against light. The watermark is the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi and can be seen on the left side of the note.

2. Check Security Thread: Indian currency notes have a security thread that runs vertically through the note. The thread is embedded in the paper and has the words RBI and the denomination of the note printed on it. The thread can be seen when held against the light.

3. Check the print quality: The print quality of genuine Indian currency notes is superior with sharp and clear lines. Counterfeit notes may have blurred lines or smudged ink.

4. Check See-Through Register: Indian currency notes have an R-through register, a small image of the denomination of the note printed on the front and back of the note which aligns perfectly when held against the light.

5. Watch out for micro-lettering: Indian currency notes have micro-lettering, which is a tiny font that can be seen under a magnifying glass. The micro-characters on genuine notes are clear and sharp but may be blurred or blurred on counterfeit notes.

6. Check the feel of the paper: Genuine Indian currency notes are printed on high quality paper which gives them a distinct feel. The paper is crisp and has a unique texture. Counterfeit notes may feel smooth or slippery to the touch.

7. Verify Serial Number: A unique serial number is printed on each Indian currency note. Check to be sure that the serial number is the same on both sides of the note and that it matches the serial number printed on the side panel.

To curb the circulation of counterfeit Indian currency notes, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) takes several measures, including use of security features in genuine currency notes, regular inspection of banks and financial institutions, and public awareness campaigns.

If you spot a counterfeit currency note, it is important to report it to the authorities immediately. Handling counterfeit currency notes is a criminal offense in India, and being caught in possession of these can lead to severe punishment including imprisonment and fine. It is important to be vigilant and take necessary steps to prevent circulation of counterfeit notes in the economy.

If you have any doubts about the authenticity of a currency note, it is best to take it to a bank or currency exchange center for verification.
