Coimbatore: A 46-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping and murdering an 80-year-old woman at her farmhouse while under the influence of alcohol in a village near Annamalai here on Thursday night.
The Annamalai police have identified the accused as P Ponnusamy, a farmhand from Ganapathipalayam village under their jurisdiction.
A police officer said the elderly woman was staying at the farmhouse with her 40-year-old daughter and 50-year-old son-in-law. “They were looking after 20 acres of farmland. The incident took place when his daughter and son-in-law had gone to a nearby village on Thursday evening.
The official said Ponnusamy worked in the field adjacent to the old woman’s property. “He walked through her property in a drunken state and realized that the woman was alone at her house. He entered the house and raped her. When the elderly woman fainted, he immediately left, leaving behind his sandals and towel.
When the woman’s daughter and son-in-law returned in the night, they found her dead and informed the Annamalai police, who sent the body to the government hospital in Pollachi for postmortem. “He later stumbled upon the towel and a pair of sandals which Ponnusamy had during our interrogation. We picked him up on Friday and he confessed to his crime.
The police later registered a case against Ponnusamy under Section 376 (A) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested him. He was produced before the District Sessions Court, which sent him to judicial custody the same night.
