Farmers’ protest against agriculture bills may soon be taught in Punjab schools

The year-long protest of farmers on the border of the national capital will now be taught in school textbooks in Punjab. In many private schools in Punjab a chapter on farmer struggle has been added to the syllabus of class 6th.

However, the chapter or book is yet to receive approval from Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), reported the Times of India. The book Moh Diyan Tanda (Feelings of Affection) has several chapters including one on peasant protest on page seven. It has been compiled by a teacher named Jagjit Singh Dhuri and will now be sent to PSEB for approval.

The above chapter chronicles the farmers’ struggle with various illustrations and the celebrations after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the repeal of the controversial agriculture law on December 19 last year.

Several questions have been added at the end of the chapter for the students to answer. The book, which is currently an individual effort, has been included in the curriculum of Sabah International School, Lahargaga in Bathinda and a few other schools. The author said that PSEB should give due permission to the book so that the students can learn about the “historic” struggle of the farmers.

The farmers’ struggle began in protest against the three new bills introduced by the central government in 2020. Farmers from Punjab and Haryana left for Delhi for a sit-in in November 2020, but were stopped at various borders of Delhi, where they were sitting with them. demand.

Farmers from other states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan also joined this movement.

Protests continued for over a year with farmers at Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders outside Delhi. Meanwhile, the government tried to establish dialogue with the protesting groups, but with little success.

After a year of talks and dialogue, the government finally withdrew three agriculture bills ending the protests in December 2021.
