A video of a man being brutally thrashed in the presence of policemen is going viral on social media. The video was shared with the claim that it shows members of the Bharatiya Janata Party attacking an innocent man after the party’s record victory in the recently concluded assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that the claim along with the video was misleading. This video is from Bihar and was shot in 2019.

We found that the official Twitter handle of the Fact Check Unit of UP Police, while replying to a post, said that the video in question was of a 2019 incident in Bihar’s Kaimur district and not UP related.

Taking a cue from this, we did a keyword search and we found screenshots of the same video which was a India Today report Published on 5 October 2019.
According to the report, the video shows an accused in a murder case attacking the son of a ward councilor in Shivaji Chowk area of Bhabua in Kaimur district of Bihar. He was accused of shooting a youth, who later succumbed to his injuries at a city hospital.
Later that person was admitted to Kaimur Sadar Hospital for treatment. The SP of Kaimur told the media at that time that the deceased was shot over a personal dispute with the criminal.

According to these reports, the person who is being beaten up in the video is Shahid Rain. The youth whom he allegedly shot was Madhav Singh, a resident of Sikhathi village.
Reports also said that information about the youth’s death, however, made the public furious and there were attacks on the hospitals where Shahid Ren was undergoing treatment. Several local shops were also attacked.
Thus it is clear that the video in question is old and belongs to Bihar. It has nothing to do with the recent victory of BJP in the UP assembly elections.
