viral post Read, “The temperature is set to rise in the coming days, so do not fill petrol in your vehicle to the maximum limit. This can cause the fuel tank to explode. Please fill half the fuel tank in your vehicle and leave room for air.

The message further states, ‘This week there have been 5 explosion accidents due to filling of maximum petrol. Please open the petrol tank once a day and let the gas stored inside come out. India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) found that this claim was false and IndianOil has never made any such claim.

AFWA investigation

We began our investigation by looking for news stories about the five alleged vehicle explosions mentioned in the message. But we couldn’t find anything that pointed to vehicle explosions caused by full tanks of fuel.

A keyword search on Google took us to a tweet from the official handle of Indian Oil Corp Ltd. On June 3, 2019, IOC tweeted: “Important announcement from #IndianOil. It is completely safe to refuel vehicles to the limit (max) specified by the manufacturer, regardless of winter or summer.

The statement also said, “Automobile manufacturers design their vehicles considering all aspects of the ambient conditions along with performance requirements, claims and inherent safety factors. The maximum volume specified in the fuel tank for petrol/diesel vehicles There is no exception. It is therefore completely safe to refuel vehicles to the full limit (maximum) specified by the manufacturer, regardless of winter or summer.

The tweet, almost three years old, not only claimed that the claim was a hoax, but also that this hoax was nothing new. The IOC also issued a similar statement on its verified Facebook page on April 9, 2022.

Thus it is clear that the claim of filling the fuel tanks to their maximum capacity is clearly false. And Indian Oil never made any such claim.
