Facing backlash over black poster, Leena Manimekalai stirs controversy again

Filmmaker Leena Manimekalai, who recently courted controversy over her film’s poster showing Goddess Kali smoking a cigarette, is again facing the wrath of social media over her latest tweet. Manimekalai shared a picture of two persons smoking in the guise of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

After Manimekalai’s tweet, many users on the micro-blogging platform demanded legal action against him.

The Madurai-born filmmaker, facing criticism for the poster of his documentary Kaali, said in his latest tweet that it was his way of showing how folk artists de-stress after a show.

“The troll army with the BJP payroll doesn’t know how folk theater artistes calm down after their performances. It’s not from my movie. it’s from everyday rural India That these Sangh Parivar want to destroy by their relentless hatred and religious fanaticism. Hindutva can never become India,” read the tweet.

Twitter took down Leena’s controversial post in which a woman dressed as a Kali Devi was seen smoking.

After her post was deleted, Leena also took to Twitter for not taking action against the trollers. “This is so funny. Will @TwitterIndia stop tweets of 200,000 haters?! These LoLife trolls tweeted and spread the same poster they found objectionable.

Several FIRs have been filed against the Toronto-based filmmaker over the black poster controversy. An FIR has been registered against him in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh under section 295A of the Indian Penal Code. They have been accused of promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and committing malicious acts with intent to hurt religious sentiments.
