New Delhi: British lawmakers are set to question Facebook and other tech giants over online safety on Thursday as European efforts to regulate social media companies gain momentum.
Members of the parliamentary committee examining the British government’s draft online security law will question representatives of Facebook, Google, Twitter and TikTok.
Governments on both sides of the Atlantic want stricter rules aimed at protecting social media users, especially young people, but the United Kingdom’s efforts are far ahead. UK MPs are asking researchers, journalists, tech executives and other experts for a report to the government on how to improve the final version of the online security bill.
The hearing comes in the same week that YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat were questioned by a US Senate panel. He provided little commitment to US legislation to protect children from harm online, which lawmakers say includes material promoting eating disorders, sexually explicit material, and addictive drugs.
Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen appeared before a UK committee this week, telling members that the company’s systems make online hate worse and that it has little incentive to fix the problem. She said time is running out to regulate social media companies that use artificial intelligence systems to determine what content people view.
Haughan was a Facebook data scientist who copied internal research documents and submitted them to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. They were also provided to a slew of media outlets, including The Associated Press, which reported several stories about how Facebook prioritized profit over security and hid its own research from investors and the public.
The UK’s online safety bill asks a regulator to ensure that tech companies comply with regulations that require them to remove hazardous or harmful content or face penalties of up to 10% of annual global revenue. The European Union is working on similar digital regulations.
British lawmakers are still grappling with thorny issues such as ensuring privacy and free speech and defining legal but harmful content, which includes online bullying and advocacy of self-harm.
They are also trying to control the misinformation that is spreading on social media.
Filipino journalist Maria Rasa, who shared this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for freedom of expression under serious risks, accepted the challenge, telling the committee on Wednesday that a law to curb disinformation is needed.
