The Indian team received 5 runs to their total thanks to the penalty that was imposed on the USA team for not starting the over on time.
Despite the United States of America putting up a phenomenal performance against India in the T20 World Cup 2024 group-stage game that took place at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, they were pushed back as they were docked 5 penalty runs.
This happened because the USA were not ready to bowl next over 60 seconds after completing the previous one. This is a new rule that has been applied to the
“If the bowling team is not ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds of the previous over being completed, a 5-run penalty will be imposed the third time it happens in an innings,” said the ICC in a statement.
The umpires had warned the USA skipper, Aaron Jones twice for violating the stop-clock rule but after the third instance of the offence, the umpire called for the five penalty runs.
Earlier the ICC also revealed that the rule would be brought into the T20 World Cup and would be in the T20I format since then it has also been set to be a permanent mandate in the white-ball format including ODI cricket.
Those five runs eased the pressure for the Men in Blue as Suryakumar Yadav scored a crucial fifty to help India get their third win in as many games in the T20 World Cup 2024.
The game was starred by Arshdeep Singh who registered his career-best figures of 4/9, running riot over the American batters in the first innings. He struck early in the first over with two wickets in the first and last balls respectively.
With the win, India has managed to qualify for the Super-8s after winning three games on the bounce. Meanwhile, the USA will hope to get the win over Ireland by enough of a margin so that they can ensure their spot in the next stage of the tournament as well.
