Four electric vehicles (EVs) in India released smoke and eventually burst into flames in the last four days, thus threatening the safety of these e-scooters. While one incident was reported from Maharashtra, the other three were from Tamil Nadu. At a time when the entire subcontinent is starting to heat up and at a time when people are actively considering switching to electric vehicles, these developments have raised widespread concerns. To understand the issues that may have led to the recent fires and to know about possible solutions, Zee News spoke to Arvind Kumar Chandiran, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT-Madras.
According to him, problems like smoke coming out of the battery and eventually catching on fire don’t happen all of a sudden. These are actually the result of a build-up (in the battery) that occurs over a period of time. The key to dealing with such issues lies in the battery management system algorithms. Mobile phones and electric vehicles have a ‘battery management system’ (BMS) to manage a rechargeable battery, ensuring it operates safely and efficiently. The BMS is designed to monitor the parameters (temperature, charging, discharging) associated with the battery pack and its individual cells, apply the collected data to eliminate safety risks and optimize battery performance.

“Electric vehicles operate in the climatic conditions prevailing across India, which includes very cold to hot and humid weather and require batteries to function in these places. Similarly, there are many users who spend a few hours every day. There are also differences in the charging patterns that users follow. The algorithms in the BMS are adapted to these dynamically changing conditions. should be extensively tested for battery life, so as to facilitate the best and safest performance of the battery,” he elaborated.
Given that EVs are in the early stages of adoption in India, Arvind Kumar is of the opinion that it is the sole responsibility of original equipment manufacturers and EV companies to deliver well-tested vehicles, suitable for Indian conditions and users. Be friendly However, he also thinks that smoke-emitting batteries and catching/exploding fire are part of an evolutionary process that was also observed in mobile phone batteries, and was eventually perfected.
Speaking about the major factors behind the damage done to electric vehicle batteries, he said that it could be thermal abuse (high or low temperature variation), mechanical abuse (accident or accident) and also misuse of electricity (overcharging and deep discharging cycles). could. He said that his laboratory at IIT Madras was also conducting controlled explosions in batteries by inducing the above abuses, in order to better understand what specific factors cause smoke and fire.
“By identifying these symptoms or any minute details and changes that we see in batteries under abuse, we will be able to develop sensors or alerts to detect issues before hand and notify the rider. By the time the battery starts giving off smoke, it’s only about 30-60 seconds to run away and that time is very important for the rider.”
In the context of developing such a mechanism to detect battery failure, he said that mobiles have finally evolved to a stage where they can be used when fully charged, when the battery is losing efficiency, etc. can give a warning. Similarly, he believes that further research and study into EV batteries may develop a triple redundant mechanism to avoid such accidents.
“As more data is available on EV batteries and their functioning, we may have BMS and sensors to alert riders in case of battery danger. With targeted measures, we can prevent further damage to batteries and here can even prevent damage to the vehicle,” he adds.
When comparing EV scooters and cars/trucks, scooters are more prone to such battery problems, as scooters lack the liquid cooling technology found in larger vehicles. Despite the high standards, major global automobile and electric vehicle brands have also faced cases of explosion in their models of electric cars.
It is worth mentioning that while mobile phone batteries store about 10 watt-hours of energy, electric vehicles store energy from a few kilowatt-hours to tens of kilowatt-hours, which is exponentially more and thus can be used for heating, thermal management, etc., the complexities are too many.
As a researcher in the field, Arvind feels that such shocks and accidents are part of the development of the technology, and it will eventually lead to better solutions and safety systems in EVs.
