JEE Mains Exam: What is the matter of alleged manipulation?

JEE Mains exam is a stepping stone for students who want to get into IITs and NITs. The critical assessment came under the radar when the CBI booked Affinity Education Pvt Ltd and its directors for solving queries of candidates by remote access in return for earning huge sums of money.

It has been alleged that the Director in connivance with other associates and touts was “manipulating the JEE (Mains) online examination and extorting a large amount of money to the aspiring students by solving the applicant’s question paper through remote access to the top NITs. from a chosen examination center in Sonepat (Haryana),” CBI spokesperson RC Joshi was quoted as saying by PTI.

Officials had said that several other examination centers and a Bengaluru-based suspected mastermind of the alleged racket are also under investigation and the CBI is conducting searches.

The accused used to get 10th and 12th mark sheets, user IDs, passwords and post-dated checks of interested students in different parts of the country as security and once the admission was done, they used to collect huge amount ranging from Rs. 12-15 lakh (approx) per candidate, Joshi pointed out.

Officials also said that the CBI conducted searches at 19 places on Thursday, during which around 20-30 post-dated checks were found, which were suspected to have been paid in return for help in clearing the examination.

During the search, it was found that the accused had sent messages asking them to delete the data from their system. According to the agency report, officials said that the agency has also found some clues which indicate that some payments were also made through hawala channels.

Will it affect JEE aspirants?

Senior CBI officials have assured that genuine candidates need not worry. Meanwhile, JEE expert and academician pointed out that as per the rules, NTA reserves the right to cancel the exam at those centers which are suspected to have been compromised, News18 reported.

The highest marks obtained by the students in any previous session may be considered in such cases, it said. With four attempts and the option of students appearing multiple times to improve their scores, the number of students affected can be reduced.

However, if a particular attempt is cancelled, the students securing the highest marks in that will be adversely affected.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday hit out at the central government over the alleged manipulation, as he wrote: “The JEE (Main) exam has been violated. Students appearing in such competitive examinations prepare very hard while battling various kinds of difficulties. We, as a nation, test them impartially. Government of India is better in providing cover-up”.

Meanwhile, it does not seem that any examination or result will be canceled as arrangements have to be made for the same and it may affect the academic schedule including IIT entrance examination.
