Pakistan’s new army chief General Asim Munir has indicated in the first ‘informal’ meeting of top commanders that Pakistan’s military establishment is prepared to intervene in the political process to ensure political and economic stability and avoid any economic defaults or civil riots. ready for.

Gen Munir, who was briefed about the current crisis and security situation, also discussed threats from Kashmir, Balochistan and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to top military officials, a meeting was held at the General Headquarters on Wednesday where DG ISI, DG MI, DG ISPR and top commanders met General Munir and congratulated him. However, Corps Commander Bahawalpur Lt Gen did not attend the meeting.

Sources said Gen Munir will soon appoint his close aides in the roles of COAS Chief of General Staff (CGS), Quarter Master General (QMG) and Corps Commanders of Bahawalpur and Rawalpindi. These posts had recently fallen vacant after the retirement of General Bajwa and the resignation and relinquishment of command of General Faiz Hameed and General Azhar Abbas, respectively.

Top commanders suggested that the country needed a ‘Charter for Economic and Political Stability’ to avoid any economic defaults or civil riots in Pakistan.

Apart from taking strong action against TTP, the top commanders are also ready to facilitate talks between the government and the opposition for stability.

He comprehensively reviewed the current internal and external security situation, particularly in Balochistan, Kashmir and along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, and the operational preparedness of the Army. General Munir reiterated the resolve of the Pakistan Army to defend the motherland against all threats.

Gen Munir entered the service through the Officers Training School program and was commissioned into the Frontier Force Regiment. He has been a close aide of Gen Bajwa ever since he took charge of troops in the Force Command Northern Areas as a brigadier under the outgoing Army Chief, who was then Commander X Corps.

Gen Munir was subsequently appointed Director General of Military Intelligence in early 2017, and was made the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief in October the following year.

However, his tenure as the top intelligence officer turned out to be the shortest ever as he was replaced within eight months by Lt Gen Faiz Hamid on the insistence of the then PM Imran Khan.

He was posted as the Gujranwala Corps Commander, a post he held for two years, before being transferred to the General Headquarters as Quarter Master General.
